AN OVERVIEW OF ROOT CANALS

Root canals are one of the most common dental procedures performed. When a tooth’s pulp tissue or nerve tissue become infected or dies, a root canal is necessary to remove it before the necrosis spreads to the bone, causing more pain, and endangering the rest of the teeth. This simple treatment is performed to avoid tooth extraction (which can cause a whole new set of problems) and prevent the need of dental implants or prosthetic teeth.

Infection of the tooth pulp can be caused by many things, such as bacteria, trauma to the tooth, untreated tooth decay, or even cracks and chips. Symptoms of a tooth infection can include intense pain, swelling of the tooth and gums or other visible signs of injury, or sensitivity to temperature.

THE ROOT CANAL PROCEDURE

Root canal treatment is the process of going inside the pulp space and removing the infected, dead tissue. The space is then disinfected and sealed with special materials. At Harvest Pointe Dental, root canal treatments are performed with advanced techniques and materials, making them far more comfortable and faster. After root canal treatment is complete, your dentist will usually place a crown on your tooth to safeguard against fracture.
